In January 2009, leaders in Hubli were discussing their vision for Hubli as a central ecosystem for social entrepreneurship in India. They were sure it could happen, but it was just a matter of when and how. Pieces of the puzzle were already falling into place: traditional NGOs work was being strengthened, students throughout the Sandbox Region were energized about leading their communities to change, and local and national businesses were pitching in to lend expertise and support. However, everyone felt that the spark of young, talented, and motivated professionals was missing.
Hubli is a thriving economy, but economic conditions continue to grow only so long as there is continuing local leadership. Like most places in India, young professionals in Hubli are a hugely untapped source of local leadership; though they are leaders of their own lives. They are passionate about their jobs, their friends, their family and this passion often overflows into other areas, such as technology, culture, and most importantly, their communities. However, these same professionals may not know the context and scope of their community’s challenges and often they do not feel they can create and implement solutions as leaders. More commonly, these bright and talented people may not have the confidence to act. For instance, an engineer might think, “but what can I do to help children in government schools? “But the answer is that everyone can lead change and create an impact.
Moreover, some of the best change is a result of “fresh eyes”, eyes which see challenges as opportunities and which bring new approaches to old problems. And so with young professionals recognized as a critical component of the entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Hubli Champions Program was born. You are each here today because the Deshpande Foundation believes that you will make a difference.
