The Champions Program is a uniqe initiative housed in the Deshpande Center for Social Entrepreneurship. We bring together professionals from all walks of life, who are highly motivated and eager to engage in exciting social initiatives. Champions participate in the program for a span of six months, during which the group visits local NGOs one Sunday every month to learn about innovative solutions that address some of our community's greatest needs. Health site visit for 3rd batch of Hubli Champions:

On Sunday, 24 October 2010, we gathered at 9 am at The Deshpande Foundation
for a presentation on health by Suzanne. Rizzo. Aft
er the presentation, half of the group traveled to Bhageerath and other half of went to Haath Mein Sehaat (HMS). At the end of the visit the group gathered at Bhoruka Charitable Trust (BCT).







Bhageerath:


Bhageerath works on sanitation in villages. We visited Belur, where Bhageerath has built 80
toilets and
worked with the Panchayat towards improving health in their village.









HMS: HMS works on water quality, sanitation, and hygiene. They conduct a 13 week hygiene education prog
ram for 4th standard students by using college volunteers as teachers. They also test water in slum areas in Hubli and Dharwad cities, and provide safewat (a chlorine based purification solution) to households with undrinkable water.



BCT:
It works towards reducing risk to HIV among high risk groups. They are more focusing on sex workers and their families and generating awareness on HIV/AIDS and other issues. The all champions visited to BCT and learn more about HIV/AIDS then some of cham
p
ions are interested to work with them.




3rd batch of Hubli Champions Agriculture site visit

The Champions were visiting to site on Agriculture 8th of August, 2010 Sunday. All the champions gathered at 9 am in DCSE. We visited to SRDS, AME and BAIF at Kalaghatagi taluk.


SRDS- This is not profit organization and working on rain water. Mr. Sikander Meeranayak has given information about “Roof top rainwater harvesting” and “Direct bore well recharge”.
They adopted modern technology in Agriculture for collecting rain water.
















AME Foundation- AME with the support of Deshpande Centre for social Entrepreneurship initiated their work on promoting Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture technologies, mainly working on SRI method of Paddy cultivation through learn by doing methodology (Farmers SHGs).




BAIF- This organization is working on dry land and unproductive land make into productive land and also improving the villagers’ economic condition. Really these all NGOs are doing good work in the community.



Hubli Champions 3rd Batch.

On Saturday the July 25th, 2010, DCSE the 3rd of Hubli Champions participated in the Education Site Visit. All the Champions gathered in DCSE then we went to “AKSHAYA PATRA FOUNDATION” at 6.30 am. After that we divided two groups, in that “A” group of Champions visit to Samarthanam organization to Baala Balaga. “B” group up Champions visit to Agsatya to Teacher foundation.

Akshaya Patra Foundation:

Akshaya Patra is a mid day meal program. An Initiative which is run in collaboration of Public and private partnership in this program. We came to knew that the kitchen here in Hubli, is one of the biggest of the kitchens run by the AKSHAYA PATRA. It is working very nice with the schools to proved food to time to time.

Samarthanam:

Started in Bangalore have extended their services in Dharwad, Hubli and Gadag Areas on 18th August 2009. It is focusing on visually impaired, disabled and underprivileged people through development initiatives focusing on education, social, economic, cultural and technological aspects. In Dharwad, they are giving training to the students on basics of computer, spoken English, and personality development and also providing the Hostel and food facilities.

Baala Balaga:

Started from 3 children in its initial days at home, the school compromise of 300 children where 2 batches has already completed its SSLC. Unique way of imparting education where in up to 7 standard regional, language education and follows its own style of syllabus up to the 4th standard. Students and parents are the Part of each and every decision making exercise. There is no uniform, innovative methods of learning and teaching for overall development.


Agsatya:

Agastya International foundation, Established in 1999 by Ramji Raghavan Kuppam – R & D Head quarters. Sub Centers - 28 in karnataka in 22 dist, 5 taluks, 32 mobile vans – science on wheels. Basic and mobile (villages – 35 kms ).

Aims and objectives Sikshna, samskara, sansara. It is focusing on sparking curiosity among children – creativity – innovation. And Motivates children to observe – learn and ask.

Teacher Foundation:

To bring Change in Education changing educator through training more enabled and inspired well planning activity orientation program to increase attitude and values because a teacher reflected entity.
