On Sunday the 6th of June, 2010, DCSE’s Champions participated in agricultural site visits!
All champions gathered at 9 am in DCSE. Shortly after meeting at DCSE, half of the group traveled to AME and the other half went to SCOPE. At 1:30pm, the groups reconvened at BAIF to conclude the site visits for the day.
At the AME Foundation, Champions had the opportunity to learn about a development-oriented, NGO, committed to improving the livelihoods of resource poor farm families in the dry land areas through promotion of ecological agriculture
AMEF started their work in Dharwad District in 2008 and now cover 25 villages in Hubli, Dharwad & Kalaghatagi’s taluks. With the support of Deshpande Foundation, AMEF has initiated their work on promoting Low External Input Sustainable Agriculture (LEISA) technologies. They primarily use a SRI method of paddy cultivation, which is a participatory methodology, called Farmers’ Field School (FFS). This methodology, enables AMEF to realize the yield potentials of various dry land crops and stabilize the yields by addressing issues related to natural resource conservation and utilization in the region.
Another group of Champions had an interactive visit at SCOPE, an NGO committed to improving farmers’ economic conditions in villages. Champions engaged in a discussion with the SCOPE team and farmers about pond rehabilitation and learned that SCOPE is working for the people by the people through the people.
The day concluded with the Champions meeting at BAIF in Kamplikoppa (Dharwad) to learn about the organization’s commitment to improving the villagers’ economic condition. BAIF shared information on how they help convert dry and unproductive land into green productive land. Two farmers explained their experience with BAIF and how they were facing problems, but are now leading successful lives through the support of BAIF.

CHINYARD:
Group A: We visited CHINYARD, which is located in Anchatageri, 8 km from Hubli. With some introduction and discussion on the project, champions saw the different handworks done by the village women like Kasuti, Kamal work, embroidery, basket making and food products like roti. After, the team had a brief meeting for half an hour with the people on the project benefits, numbers of beneficiaries and SHGs. Champions cross verified their way of managing accounts, involvement towards the work, and discussed about problems.
Group B: We visited CHINYARD, which is located in Chinnapora. In that organization, they discussed about training for women of tailoring. Through this discussion, we came to knew that the women are good in stitching but not in marketing or communication. They need a path for production regarding this, and we gave suggestions to them. After that we went from CHINYARD to TIDE for understanding their activities in livelihood.
RAPID:
After this we began with their next site visit to RAPID and were greeted with a presentation by Director Mrs. Vani Purohit. RAPID (Rehabilitative Assistance for People in Distress) is a organization which rehabilitates divorced, deserted, widowed and disabled women in Dharwad district. We suggested that they start some more projects like stitching shirts. All Champions are happy that RAPID is creating economic, social and cultural opportunities for women in distress through skill development, employment and counseling.
TIDE
This organization works on smokeless stoves. It gives training on the use and construction of smokeless stoves to 5 eligible members from a village. These trainees then go on to give awareness about smokeless stoves and work to build them in their village. By building the stoves in the homes of other villages, the trainees are able to generate income for themselves. TIDE has so far trained 35 females.
All Champions gathered at 9.00 a.m at Deshpande Foundation’s Seminar Hall. Director Naveen Jha presented slides on Health until 11.00 am. Champions divided into two groups and headed over to Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT), Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) and BHAGEERATH under the leadership of Naveen, Megha and Mallamma. Mr. Morab introduced FPAI, an organization which gives training to doctors and nurses in order to curb the problem of health professionals conducting unsafe abortions. FPAI is mainly focusing on Advocacy, Abortion, HIV/AIDS, Access, Adolescents.
The other Champions team visited the KHPT office and learned about the different HIV/AIDS related awareness programs conducted by the organization, as well as their different approaches to educating the masses.
Both teams of Champions assembled at BHAGEERATH in Shivalli, a village near to Dharwad, for lunch.
After lunch, Champions commenced their site visit to Bhageerath NGO. Here they saw that a bio-gas unit has been set up, which runs on the kitchen waste from Anganwadis. Additionally, the Champions made a thorough study on the Eco-Sanitation Toilets constructed in this village, as well as other steps taken by the Panchayat towards the better health of their village.
