All Champions gathered at 9.00 a.m at Deshpande Foundation’s Seminar Hall. Director Naveen Jha presented slides on Health until 11.00 am. Champions divided into two groups and headed over to Karnataka Health Promotion Trust (KHPT), Family Planning Association of India (FPAI) and BHAGEERATH under the leadership of Naveen, Megha and Mallamma. Mr. Morab introduced FPAI, an organization which gives training to doctors and nurses in order to curb the problem of health professionals conducting unsafe abortions. Mr. Morab and Dr. Tavargeri, a FPAI volunteer explained that family planning is important to ensure that society does not suffer a burden of a growing population that it cannot feed, educate or care for. FPAI is mainly focusing on Advocacy, Abortion, HIV/AIDS, Access, Adolescents.
The other Champions team visited the KHPT office and learned about the different HIV/AIDS related awareness programs conducted by the organization, as well as their different approaches to educating the masses.
Both teams of Champions assembled at BHAGEERATH in Shivalli, a village near to Dharwad, for lunch.
After lunch, Champions commenced their site visit to Bhageerath NGO. Here they saw that a bio-gas unit has been set up, which runs on the kitchen waste from Anganwadis. Additionally, the Champions made a thorough study on the Eco-Sanitation Toilets constructed in this village, as well as other steps taken by the Panchayat towards the better health of their village.
Upon completing their site visits, Champions returned to DCSE and Mr. Ravindra from Gramma Sikshana Foundation presented and led a discussion on the dangers of tobacco products.
Finally, Champions were invited to the DCSE Digital Lab for an IT training. Here they learned the importance and benefits of social networking sites such as Facebook, as well as the financial benefits of services like Way2SMS, which also provide back-up services in the case of a lost mobile.
